Fresno has started accepting applications for new cannabis businesses, and they’ve set aside up to 6 permits for people who qualify as Social Equity Applicants.

Social Equity programs like Fresno’s exist in San Francisco, Oakland, and LA, and while the details differ, the broad idea is that people who have been hurt by the War on Drugs should get preference in opening new legal businesses.

In Fresno’s case, to qualify you must broadly:

  • Have a past conviction for a cannabis crime, or be an immediate family member with a past conviction for a cannabis crime.

and/or

  • Meet certain low income criteria, like having an annual income less than $35,000.

If that could be you, the deadline to submit your qualification materials is midnight on Friday, November 13.

If you’re at all interested, the important thing is to submit something now. Even after the 13th you can go back and fill in incomplete information, provide additional documents, etc., but if you’re not at least in the system by the 13th you’ll be locked out entirely.
